🎯 Objective
Avoid being the player holding the single unmatched Queen (the Old Maid) when all other cards have been paired.
🃏 Old Maid Setup & Rules
- Remove one Queen from the deck (leaving one unpaired Queen — the "Old Maid").
- Deal all cards. Players immediately discard any pairs face-up.
▶ How to Play Old Maid
- The player left of the dealer fans their hand face-down towards the next player.
- That player draws one card; if it pairs with any card in their hand, discard the pair. Then they fan their hand to the next player.
- Play continues clockwise.
- Players who discard all their cards are safe and out of the game.
- The player left holding the single Queen at the end is the Old Maid and loses.

📖 Detailed Guide
Setting up the game
- Old Maid seats 2 to 8 players and uses a 51-card deck — one Queen is removed before the deal so that a single Queen can never be paired.
- All the cards are dealt out; some players may receive one more than others, which is fine.
- As soon as the cards are dealt, every player discards all the pairs already in their hand face-up.
- Only rank matters when pairing — any two Kings are a pair regardless of suit.
Taking a card
- On your turn you take one card, unseen, from the next player who still holds cards.
- If the card you take pairs with one in your hand, discard the pair immediately.
- If it does not pair, it stays in your hand and play moves on.
- Because you draw from a fanned hand, the position of the card is the only information you get.
Going out
- A player whose hand becomes empty is safe and out of the game for good.
- Play continues among the remaining players, so the pool of hands shrinks steadily.
- The unpaired Queen cannot be discarded — it can only be passed on when another player happens to take it.
- Everyone at the table eventually knows roughly who is holding it, which is where the fun comes from.
Losing
- The game ends when only one player is left holding a card, and that card is the odd Queen.
- That player is the Old Maid. There is no winner in the usual sense — everyone else simply escaped.
- If you are stuck with the Queen, try to keep your hand ordered so opponents cannot read your hesitation.
- Play a series of rounds and track who has been the Old Maid most often.
📊 Old Maid Scoring
One player is the loser (the Old Maid). All others win. Play multiple rounds; track who has been the Old Maid the most.
