🎯 Objective

Collect the most books — complete sets of all 4 cards of the same rank.

🃏 Go Fish Setup & Rules

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck. 2 players: deal 7 cards each. 3–6 players: deal 5 cards each.
  2. Place remaining cards face-down as the "ocean" or "pond."

▶ How to Play Go Fish

  1. Ask any one opponent for a rank you already hold at least one of (e.g., "Do you have any Kings?").
  2. If they do, they give you ALL cards of that rank and you take another turn.
  3. If not, they say "Go Fish!" — draw one card from the ocean. Your turn ends unless you drew the asked rank.
  4. When you collect all 4 of a rank, place the complete book face-up in front of you.
  5. Play continues until the ocean is empty and no more books can be formed.

📖 Detailed Guide

Setup and the deal

  • Go Fish uses a standard 52-card deck and seats 2 to 4 players. A two-player game deals 7 cards each; with three or four players everyone gets 5.
  • Spread the remaining cards face-down in the middle as the pond, sometimes called the ocean.
  • Only rank matters in Go Fish — suits are ignored entirely.
  • Sort your hand by rank before you start so you can see at a glance which ranks you are closest to completing.

Asking for cards

  • On your turn, ask one specific player for one specific rank — for example, do you have any Kings?
  • You may only ask for a rank you already hold at least one of. This is the rule that keeps the game honest and makes listening worthwhile.
  • If they have any, they must hand over every card of that rank, and you take another turn straight away.
  • A good turn can chain several times, so start with the rank you are most confident someone holds.

Going fishing

  • If the player you asked has nothing, they tell you to go fish and you draw one card from the pond.
  • Draw exactly the card you asked for and you show it and take another turn. Otherwise your turn ends and play moves on.
  • Pay attention to what everybody asks for — every question reveals a rank that player is holding.
  • That information cuts both ways: asking for a rank tells the table you hold it too, so expect it to be asked back.

Books and winning

  • Collecting all four cards of a rank makes a book. Lay it face-up in front of you straight away.
  • If a book completes your hand and cards remain in the pond, draw a new hand and stay in the game.
  • Play continues until all thirteen books have been made and no cards remain.
  • The winner is whoever collected the most books — not whoever emptied their hand first.
